Personally, I think Amazon supporting smaller publishing companies is beneficial because it is like when a country supports domestic product. Not only will it help those publishing companies and increase their popularity (since, books are basically the same product - a best seller is a best seller and will be sold between different publishing companies) but the small publishing companies will gain more revenue. The fact that Amazon premium is only sharing these free books for the kindle and not the iPad or iPhone is a smart move economically, as more people will buy the Amazon kindle and therefore support smaller publishing companies.

Amazon's Kindle has been doing incredibly well on the market, selling millions of their product as well as helping small publishing companies and selling numerous from the New York Times best seller list. Large publishing companies explained their discontent with the situation saying since Amazon premium is giving out free copies of a book per month (given, the buyer has to pay for the Amazon premium service monthly) on the kindle, they are driving away their customers. The problem is, large publishing companies will most likely not agree to free books per month and Amazon is supporting smaller publishing companies, making them more popular and thriving.
